What happened to the Polish black box from Tu-154M that crashed in Smolensk?

Maciej Lasek admits that initially the Russians brought to Warsaw some other electronic device that was not the Polish black box from Smolensk. According to him the Russian did it by mistake. So, what in fact was sent for analysis to the Polish producer of the Polish black box?

The Polish black box of Tu-154 wandered from Russia to Poland back and forth. It turns out that what we got the first time around was not a black box from the Polish aircraft. The Russians brought to Poland for testing something else. This fact has just been revealed at the hearing of the Commission for National Defense by Minister of Defense Antoni Macierewicz.

At the stormy meeting of the parliamentary commission for national defense Minister Macierewicz revealed the backstage dealings after the tragedy of 4/10 and concluded: "The denial of the fact that the plane broke up in the air is an attempt at ‘turning back the Vistula River with a stick,’" he reminded the MPs.

Maciej Lasek, a former head of the governmental Miller’s commission that initially investigated the Smolensk crash, commented on this matter on TVN24. To the astonishment of many, Lasek for the first admitted publically that the Polish black box was initially confused with some other operating device.

Indeed, the reading the Polish black box was possible only after the second delivery. For the first time, immediately after the crash, a black box was brought by representatives of the Russian Institute of Military Air Force, and it was to be read by the Polish manufacturer in the presence of Polish prosecutors and the Polish commission. It turned out however, that because it was a wrong device, no reading was possible. The mistakenly taken device was not the black box.

Lasek tried to explain that it was easy to go wrong in this case and argued that already at the second trial they received the right device, were able to properly investigate the black box, and were able to read the Polish Flight Data Recorder.

“The Polish black box was read in Poland by the Polish manufacturer of this device - the ATM Company. In our expertise, and not only in our, the ATM Company which is the only manufacturer of this product, and is in the possession of unique codes that enable the descrambling of the recording, could make this reading only in Poland. I think that the Minister did not understand the information contained in the documents of the prosecutor's office or the Miller’s Commission,” said Lasek. “The Minister shall immediately give notice to the prosecution instead of giving us such information,” he added ironically.

Both we and the prosecutors have no doubt that we read the right data,” argued the former head of the Miller’s commission that investigated the causes of the Smolensk crash.

Taking the opportunity of TV appearance, Lasek once again repeated on TVN24 the Miller’s commission theory about the "armored birch,” which was so powerful that was able to cut off 1/3 of the wing of Tupolev. “The plane broke up in the air in part because it hit a birch tree, so that the fragment has been torn off from the wing. The crew incorrectly executed a go–around command, breaking all the rules of safety, without complying with the command system, which was to protect against such an accident. Despite the TAWS system, the plane descended to a height of 6 m., collided with a series of trees and shrubs and finally with the unlucky birch, whereby 1/3 of the wing was torn off, and a plane in an uncontrolled fashion, after another 800 meters, collided with the birch tree.” Lasek explained.

Destruction of Evidence
Smolensk Crash: Destruction of evidence.
Already during the first night of the crash, the Russians were removing the most important pieces of evidence from the crash site, that is, the remains of the Polish President’s Tupolev, TU-154M. Parts of the aircraft were transported away without any prior planning, and some of them were purposefully destroyed. Read more here

The trip to Smolensk was expected to highlight Russia finally admitting culpability in the massacre, after long having blamed it on the Germans, an atrocity they had tried to conceal for over 70 years.

As for the reception committee, it had different ideas. Putin wasn’t looking forward to such an occasion. Into this poisonous reception brew was President Kaczynski’s well-known public criticism of Moscow and Putin, a habit that has ended the lives of others within Russia – and abroad. A few discouraging Russian requirements – that Kaczynski could not attend in any official capacity – did not halt the Poles. Kaczynski would go anyway on non-official, “personal” business. To Russians, such a distinction would be meaningless, not lessening the possible international excoriation of such an event. A problem ripe for a modern, Russian solution: a tragic, ‘natural’ accident.
